Dr Raouf Bassily

Gastroenterologist & Endoscopist

Dr. Bassily has more than 35 years experience as a clinician and more than 20 years experience as a gastroenterologist. He passed the RACP exam (UK) and holds a Masters degree in Medicine . He is a member of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia and the American Gastroenterological Association.

His early clinical experience was in Alexandria Egypt where he completed his undergraduate degree. He worked for three years in Alexandria University hospital where he gained invaluable clinical experience.  He migrated to Australia in 1990 and qualified to practice medicine in Australia in 1991.

His Basic Physician Training was undertaken at the Austin and Repatriation Medical Centre. His Advanced Physician Training was initially in Infectious Diseases at Fairfield Hospital, The Royal Melbourne Hospital and The Alfred Hospital. This involved a combination of experience including HIV medicine, Tropical diseases medicine and Hospital based infectious diseases.

He subsequently undertook specialist training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Austin Hospital, which gave him an extensive experience in liver diseases, liver transplantation, luminal gastroenterology, emergency and elective endoscopy.

He has an interest in community Gastroenterology especially Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (Crohn’s Disease/Ulcerative Colitis), Functional Bowel Disorders (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), Coeliac disease, Colorectal cancer,  polyps and upper and lower Endoscopy. He has regularly attended local and international conferences, meetings, and workshops in the field of Gastroenterology.

Dr Bassily goes skiing with his family every year, he also enjoys gardening and walking along the Yarra in Warrandyte. You will also find him in summer walking on the beach in Barwon Heads. He likes reading, going to the movies with his family and watching musicals. He speaks French and Arabic fluently.

Dr Simon Glance

Gastroenterologist & Endoscopist

Dr. Glance completed gastroenterology, hepatology & endoscopy training at Royal Melbourne Hospital Parkville and Monash Medical Centre Clayton before undertaking a fellowship in Interventional Endoscopy – developing skills in advanced endoscopy including; polypectomy and Endoscopic Dilatation of strictures.

He has an interest in all areas of gastroenterology & hepatology including – gastroscopy / colonoscopy, capsule endoscopy (now available at GastroNorth), Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (Crohn’s Disease/Ulcerative Colitis), Functional Bowel Disorders (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), Liver Diseases (Hepatitis B/C & Autoimmune Hepatitis) and Gastroparesis.

Dr. Glance regularly attends both national and international conferences in Gastroenterology & Hepatology to keep up to date with the latest advances in the field.

He is the Director of Gastroenterology at Northern Health and works privately in Bundoora and Whittlesea.

Dr Tin Nguyen

Gastroenterologist & Endoscopist

Dr Tin Nguyen graduated with First Class Honours from Monash Medical School in 2000. He finished in the top 5% of the year level, and was awarded a number of prizes during his undergraduate training. Dr Tin Nguyen completed his specialist Gastroenterology training at The Alfred and St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne. During this time, he was exposed to a wide spectrum of gastroenterological conditions and endoscopic procedures.

Subsequently, Dr Tin Nguyen was awarded a Gastroenterological Society of Australia research scholarship, and completed a two year postgraduate hepatology fellowship at St Vincent’s Hospital and the prestigious Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory. He has numerous publications to his name, including original articles, reviews editorials, and book chapters.

Dr Tin Nguyen continues to maintain a broad range of interests in all areas of Gastroenterology including endoscopy, viral hepatitis, inflammatory bowel disease and functional bowel disorders. He is a Staff Gastroenterologist at The Northern Hospital (Epping). Additionally he has private rooms in, Bundoora and Doreen.

Providing service to the community is a priority for Dr Tin Nguyen. He has served as the President of the Australian Vietnamese Health Professionals Society of Victoria.

Dr Shamilah Lachal

Gastroenterologist & Endoscopist

Dr.Lachal has been practising medicine for more than 15 years. She graduated in 1994 from Melbourne University with honours and became a fellow of the College of Physicians in 2002. She did basic physician training at the Royal Melbourne Hospital with advanced gastroenterology training at the Royal Melbourne and Western Hospital. She went on to do research in the area of bowel cancer and was awarded a PhD in 2006. Since then she has worked in clinical practice at the Western Hospital and the Broadmeadows Health Service where she has had extensive experience in performing gastroscopy and colonoscopy as well as working in general gastroenterology and hepatology including viral hepatitis and Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

She is the mother of 3 children and believes strongly in the doctor patient partnership in achieving good health.

Dr Lachal’s areas of interest include Inflammatory bowel disease (Ulcerative Collitis/Crohn’s Disease), Irritable Bowel Syndrome, carbohydrate intolerance, coeliac disease, Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease, Hepatits B and C, alcohol related liver disease as well as community gastroenterology and hepatology.

Dr Alvin Chung

Gastroenterologist & Endoscopist

Dr Alvin Chung graduated from medical school at the University of Melbourne in 2003. His basic physician training was undertaken at the Austin and Northern Hospitals. Upon completion of the physician examinations, he was appointed the Elizabeth Austin Registrar at Austin Hospital overseeing physician training and general medical care.

Gastroenterology training was then completed at Austin Hospital and Box Hill Hospital where he obtained expertise in managing a wide variety of gastroenterology conditions. He then undertook a fellowship in Inflammatory Bowel Disease gaining further experience managing this condition.

Dr Chung is a consultant gastroenterologist with public appointments at Eastern Health and Northern Health. He is also a senior lecturer with Monash University and Principal Investigator for multinational clinical trials in Inflammatory Bowel Disease based at Box Hill Hospital. He currently has private rooms in Bundoora, Bulleen and Lower Templestowe.

In addition to his interest in inflammatory bowel disease, he has expertise in managing functional gut disorders (incl. IBS), liver diseases and is accredited to perform gastroscopy, colonoscopy and capsule endoscopy.

Dr Joshua Butt

Gastroenterologist and Interventional Endoscopist

Dr Joshua Butt is a gastroenterologist and interventional endoscopist with a passion for providing the highest quality, individualised care to his patients. He is compassionate, respectful and highly experienced. His approach is holistic and collaborative, using evidenced based medicine as well as novel understandings of gut function and the latest technical advances.

Dr Butt is proficient at treating multiple gastroenterological conditions including irritable bowel syndrome, coeliac disease, reflux, abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhoea and constipation. His additional expertise in high quality and interventional endoscopy procedures includes gastroscopy, colonoscopy, bowel cancer screening, management of a positive FOBT, family history of bowel cancer or polyposis syndrome, the removal of large polyps (endoscopic mucosal resection), treatment of Barrett’s oesophagus and capsule endoscopy. He is also skilled in advanced procedures including ERCP, endoscopic ultrasound, gastrointestinal stent insertion and balloon enteroscopy.

Completing his medical degree with honours, Dr Butt was awarded the top academic result for the year at the University of Newcastle in 2004. His physician training was completed at the Royal Melbourne Hospital before undertaking advanced training in Gastroenterology at the Austin Hospital, Northern Hospital and Box Hill Hospital. He went onto complete two years of additional advanced endoscopy training with fellowships at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne and St Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, Canada. 

Dr Butt sees patients for private consultation and endoscopy procedures in the inner north and north of Melbourne as well as Albury. He aims to see all new Melbourne referrals within 2 weeks.

Dr Butt holds public appointments as the Head of Endoscopy Services at Northern Health, Gastroenterologist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and visiting specialist Gastroenterologist at Albury Wodonga Health.

Encouraging future generations of high quality doctors is important to Dr Butt and he is actively involved in training of physicians, gastroenterologists and medical students. He is interested in the patient experience, and has conducted research including a study aiming to optimise dietary preparation for colonoscopy with the “White Diet”. Recently he has collaborated on updating the national bowel cancer screening guidelines for 2018.

Dr Butt speaks Spanish as well as English. He lives in the inner north of Melbourne and is a proud husband and father to two daughters. Outside of work he enjoys trying his hand at farming on a small property in South Gippsland and making salami and other small goods.

Dr Soleiman Kashkooli

Gastroenterologist & Endoscopist

Dr Kashkooli received his internal medicine training at Eastern Health in Melbourne, and completed his Gastroenterology and Hepatology training at Concord Hospital in Sydney.

Dr Kashkooli undertook a year of fellowship in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) in Toronto, Canada where he was also involved with the management of colorectal anastomotic strictures using endoscopic balloon dilation. He has many publications in the area of his specialty. Dr Kashkooli has public hospital appointments where he is involved with training young doctors and medical students. Currently he is Head of Inflammatory Bowel Disease ( IBD) Unit at Northern Health.

Soleiman enjoys treating patients across the broad spectrum of gastroenterological disorders such as liver disease, coeliac diseas, GORD, hepatitis B&C and IBS, and is able to see urgent referrals, either for consult or directly for Gastroscopy/ Colonoscopy.
