Dr Raouf Bassily is a gastroenterologist and endoscopist with more than 40 years of clinical experience. He provides compassionate, evidence-based care for a wide range of digestive health conditions and is committed to a patient-centred approach to medicine.

Dr Bassily completed his medical degree at Alexandria University in Egypt, followed by three years at Alexandria University Hospital – a major referral centre for complex gastrointestinal cases. In 1990, he migrated to Australia and undertook specialist training in gastroenterology at the Austin Hospital, completing this in 1999. His training included liver disease, liver transplantation, luminal gastroenterology, inflammatory bowel disease, and advanced endoscopy.

In addition to his medical degree, Dr Bassily holds a Master’s degree and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP). He has also attained the Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom (MRCP, UK).

For over 25 years, Dr Bassily has been a Consultant Gastroenterologist at Northern Health. In 2010, he established GastroNorth to provide specialist care across Melbourne’s northern suburbs and to support collaboration between public and private practice.

Clinical interests include:
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Coeliac disease
  • Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD)

Dr Bassily consults privately at GastroNorth in Bundoora, Whittlesea, and Wallan, and performs endoscopic procedures at The Victorian Gut Centre, Northpark Private Hospital, and Northern Private Hospital.

He speaks English, Arabic, and French, and is a member of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia and the American Gastroenterological Association.

Outside of work, Dr Bassily enjoys time with his family and hobbies including drawing, painting, poetry, travelling, bike riding, and skiing.
