A gastroscopy is a procedure that allows your gastroenterologist to examine the lining of the oesophagus (food pipe), stomach, and duodenum (first part of the small intestine). It is commonly performed to investigate symptoms such as reflux, difficulty swallowing, upper abdominal pain, iron deficiency anaemia and persistent indigestion.
During the procedure, a thin flexible tube called an endoscope is gently passed through your mouth while you are under light sedation. The endoscope contains a camera that allows your specialist to carefully examine your upper digestive tract and, if required, take small tissue samples (biopsies).
The procedure takes around 15 minutes. A current referral from your doctor is required, and because sedation is used, you will need someone to drive you home afterwards.

How do I prepare for a gastroscopy?
Before your gastroscopy, you will receive instructions about fasting and any medications that may need to be adjusted. As sedation is used, you must arrange for a responsible adult to take you home after your procedure, as you will not be able to drive.
How long does a gastroscopy take?
The procedure itself usually takes around 15 minutes. However, you should allow approximately two to three hours for admission, the procedure, recovery from sedation and discharge.
Do I need a referral to book a gastroscopy?
Yes. A current referral from your GP or another medical specialist is required before booking your gastroscopy. Once your referral has been received, our team will contact you to arrange your appointment. Current wait times for procedures are typically 2–3 weeks.
