Dr Shamilah Lachal has been practising medicine for more than 25 years. She graduated in 1994 from Melbourne University with honours, and became a fellow of the College of Physicians in 2002. She did her basic physician training at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and then completed advanced gastroenterology training at the Royal Melbourne and Western Hospital. Dr Shamilah Lachal then commenced her research in the area of Bowel Cancer, and was awarded a PhD in 2006.

Since then, she has worked in clinical practice at the Western Hospital and Broadmeadows Health Service, where she has had extensive experience in performing gastroscopy and colonoscopy.

Dr Shamilah Lachal has broad range of interests including, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Ulcerative Collitis / Crohn’s Disease), Irritable Bowel Syndrome, carbohydrate intolerance, Coeliac disease, Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease, Hepatitis B and C, alcohol related liver disease, as well as community Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

Dr Shamilah Lachal regularly attends national and international conferences in Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and is a member of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia (GESA). She is the mother of 3 children, and believes strongly in the doctor patient partnership in achieving good health.

Dr Shamilah Lachal is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at Northern Health, and works privately in Bundoora and Eltham.
