Gastroenterologist & Interventional Endoscopist

Dr Joshua Butt is a gastroenterologist and interventional endoscopist with a passion for providing the highest quality, individualised care to his patients. He has a broad range of general gastroenterological interests as well as additional interventional endoscopy expertise. He is proficient at diagnosing and treating multiple gastroenterological conditions including those of the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, liver and bile ducts.

His interventional expertise includes high quality gastroscopy and colonoscopy (including bowel cancer screening, management of positive FOBT, family history of bowel cancer and polyposis syndrome), the removal of large or complex lesions through the gastrointestinal tract via Endoscopic Mucosal Resection and Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection, the treatment of Barrett’s Oesophagus, Endoscopic Ultrasound, ERCP, Balloon Enteroscopy and Capsule Endoscopy.

Completing his medical degree with honours, he graduated with the top academic result of his year from the University of Newcastle in 2004. His physician training was completed at the Royal Melbourne and Western Hospitals before undertaking advanced training in Gastroenterology at the Austin Hospital, Northern Hospital and Box Hill Hospital. He went onto complete two years of additional advanced endoscopy training with fellowships at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne and St Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, Canada.

Dr Joshua Butt sees patients for private consultation and endoscopy procedures in Coburg, Bundoora and Epping and holds a public appointment as Consultant Gastroenterologist and Head of Endoscopy Services at Northern Health. He is actively involved in training and supervision of physicians, gastroenterologists, and medical students and interested in the patient experience and quality endoscopy practice with research in these fields. He has also contributed to several Australian endoscopic guidelines.

Dr Joshua Butt speaks Spanish (reasonably well!). He lives in the inner north of Melbourne and is a proud husband and father to two daughters. Outside of work he enjoys learning and practicing regenerative farming and revegetation at the family’s property in South Gippsland. He is a keen salami maker and slow food enthusiast.
