Information About Weight Loss Procedures

Intragastric Balloon

The intragastric balloon offers patients a non-surgical approach to weight loss.

The intragastric balloon is a soft, silicone balloon that is inserted into the stomach via a gastroscope, where it is inflated with sterile saline to occupy a space and limit the food carrying capacity of the stomach. This leads to a feeling of fullness sooner, resulting in smaller portions of food being consumed.

Intragastric balloons are most effective when combined with a comprehensive lifestyle programme. At Gastronorth, you will be offered support by a team of specialists and allied health professionals to maximise and maintain your weight loss at a healthy level.

What does it involve? Placement of the intragastric balloon takes approximately 20 minutes and is performed under anaesthetic by a gastroenterologist. It is considered to be a minimally invasive procedure and as no incisions on the skin are made.

Who is it for? The gastric balloon is most suitable in patients with a BMI > 27 who are not able to lose weight with exercise and diet. They must be willing to participate in a medically-supervised lifestyle and behaviour modification program.

How long does the balloon stay in the stomach? The balloon can remain in the stomach for 6 months. It acts to reduce appetite with an average weight loss of between 10-15kg.

How much weight can you expect to lose? Intragastric balloons are very effective at reducing appetite and improving a sensation of fullness (or satiety) after eating. The intragastric balloons can be regarded as training wheels – they are temporary devices to help kick start your weight loss and instill long lasting dietary and lifestyle change.

The amount of weight loss to be expected about 15% TBWL (Total Body Weight Loss) on average; i.e. a 100kg person could expect to lose 15kg. At Gastronorth, we offer the gastric balloon in conjunction with our medically supervised program, incorporating regular, ongoing consultations with our specialist doctors, dietitian +/- psychologists and exercise physiologist, to ensure maximum results during the balloon placement, and maintenance of weight once the balloon is removed.

What are the side effects & risks? Following the procedure, it is common to experience some cramps and nausea as your stomach adjusts to the balloon. A medication plan is provided and this is often initiated prior to balloon insertion to minimise nausea. You will be on a liquid or soft diet for a few weeks. The gastric balloon procedure is safe but as with any procedure, complications may occur and can include, oesophageal or gastric ulcers, or perforation or deflation of the balloon which may lead to blockage.

Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty
Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty is a weight loss procedure pioneered at the Mayo Clinic USA in 2012 and is now available in Australia.

The procedure is a non-surgical one, whereby the capacity of the stomach is decreased without any incisions. It is performed in a hospital under a general anaesthetic, by a specialist interventional endoscopist.

This procedure, along with a prescribed healthy diet and moderate exercise, will allow one to lose weight and maintain a healthy weight.

What Does It Involve? It is a gastroscopy procedure, where a flexible tube with a camera is passed through the mouth down to the stomach. Using a special device attached to the gastroscope, a series of stitches are made in the stomach wall, which reduces the volume of the stomach by 75-80%, and therefore the stomach’s capacity to store food. As a result, one will feel a sense of fullness after consuming less food and the stomach will also empty itself at a slower rate so the patient feels fuller for longer.

The procedure usually takes approximately 60 mins to perform and often patients are discharged the following day.

Whilst this procedure is considered permanent, it is potentially reversible with removal of the stitches. This will allow the stomach to eventually return to its full volume.

Who Is It For? This procedure is currently recommended for those with a Body Mass Index (BMI) between 30-40. Calculate your BMI here. Those considering this procedure should also have no significant heart or lung problems or severe reflux disease.

Studies have shown weight loss of up to 20-25% of one’s total body weight, over 18 months along with a healthy lifestyle (diet and exercise).

Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty is a relatively new procedure for weight loss therefore it’s long term effectiveness is unknown. Results from the last 5 years show that one can lose weight consistently if they practise a healthy lifestyle.

What Are The Side Effects And Risks?

Side effects may include abdominal pain, nausea, cramping and vomiting, however, we have effective ways of minimising these side effects, particularly the nausea and vomiting. The side effects typically resolve after 2-3 days.

Complications with this procedure are small. There have been no deaths documented for the well over 2000 cases performed over the last 5 years. The risk of internal bleeding and infection are minimal, at only 1%.

Due to the elasticity of the stomach, over time it may stretch which can lead to some loss in restriction and possible weight gain. A revisional procedure can be performed to restore the restriction following a thorough discussion with our team to ensure there are no other issues that could have contributed to the weight regain.

At this point, Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty has shown to be safe and effective non-surgical procedure for weight loss and maintenance of weight loss.

What Happens After The Procedure?

Patients will often go home the following day. Following the procedure, patients will be required to fast for 8 hours and then will be placed on a specialised diet to achieve the best possible results.

At Gastronorth, we have a team of doctors, specialist GI dietitians and psychologists to provide patients with the support and guidance to achieve optimal results.
