Information about Gastritis
What is Gastritis?
Gastritis refers to inflammation of the stomach lining. There are many causes of gastritis, although common causes include:
How is Gastritis diagnosed?
Gastritis can be detected during a Gastroscopy, which is a procedure that enables your doctor to examine the lining of the oesophagus (food pipe/gullet), stomach, and duodenum. Tissue samples (biopsies) of the stomach lining are taken to definitively diagnose gastritis, and also to check for evidence of Helicobacter pylori infection.
What are the symptoms of Gastritis?
People who have gastritis may experience abdominal upset or pain. However, often there are no symptoms at all.
What is the treatment for Gastritis?
Medications which reduce the amount of acid production in the stomach are often prescribed. The treatment for gastritis is also dependent on the cause (see above). For example, if gastritis is caused by Helicobacter pylori infection then your doctor may prescribe a course of medication to treat the infection.
